SuperComputing 2011: Session on SaaS-Based Research

November 18, 2011

The focus of SuperComputing 2011 was Connecting Communities through High Performance Computing (HPC). To build a larger, more diverse, knowledgeable and skilled community, SC11 is focusing on innovating HPC applications and advancing scientific discovery for the local, regional, national and global society.

Session Title: The Pediatric Heart Network Portal: A collaboration of Academia, Government, and Industry to Improve Image Workflow in Clinical Research
Session Chair: Ian Foster
Panelists: Vas Vasiliadis, Raimond L. Winslow, Ian Foster, Deepak Singh, Shreyas Cholia

Summary: With the world moving to web-based tools for everything from wage reporting to soccer scheduling, it’s no wonder scientists are now seeking online technologies to support their research. But the requirements of high-performance computational research are both unique and daunting: massive data, complex software, limited budgets, and demand for increased collaboration. While “the cloud” promises to alleviate some of these pressures, concerns about feasibility still exist for scientists and the HPC facilities where they compute. This panel will explore the capacity of Software as a Service (SaaS) to transform computational research so the challenges above can be leveraged to advance, not hinder, innovation and discovery. With panelists representing each constituency of a potential online research environment (researcher, supercomputing center, SaaS provider, and cloud provider) we will debate the delta between where we are – and where we need to be – for scientists to reliably and securely perform research in the cloud.
