Eureka! Clinical Analytics Use Case

Who?

As a cardiac imaging researcher, I want to:

  • To identify subject cohorts based on clinical data from one or more clinical databases and/or datasets
  • To retrospectively analyze medical record data
  • To integrate data from heterogeneous data sources and perform further analysis on the integrated data

How?

These needs/desires serve as the basis for the design of the Eureka! tool and its underlying infrastructure.  Within Eureka!, users can:

  • Upload electronic medical record data into i2b2
  • Associate EMR data with data from other systems (e.g., CAWorks, XNAT-CVI, WaveformECG, etc.)
  • Define sequential, overlapping and frequency patterns in time-stamped data, to create criteria for cohort selection
  • Extract combined data for analysis in a clinical study

Eureka! Benefits:

  • As more and more data resources become available to Eureka, they can be added to the existing data for more in-depth queries
  • Separate data can be combined in one location (Eureka), providing a method of data integration not possible before
  • While the initial researcher may have had one desired hypothesis to query, the data itself can be reused by other researchers asking different questions, provided that the data to mine is not limited to the original researchers focus
