Title: “Automated Extraction of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Findings from Clinical Reports: The Promise, the Challenges, and Ideas for the Future."

Abstract:
The ability to extract cardiovascular and pulmonary findings from clinical text promises more efficient review of patient records to facilitate broader and richer clinical research in this domain. Natural language processing (NLP) techniques perform as well as experts at extracting some types of information from clinical reports and offer a scalable solution to chart review. However, there are many challenges to realizing the goal of applying NLP, including patient privacy and data security requirements and the technological burden of deploying and using NLP algorithms to support human review. In this talk, we will offer a short tutorial on NLP, describe challenges in applying NLP to clinical text, and propose possible solutions to these challenges in order to facilitate improved patient care through secondary use of patient data.
Speaker Bios:
Wendy Chapman, PhD is an associate professor at the University of California, San Diego. Her research has focused on extracting clinical information from narrative reports and making clinical data and tools more accessible for research and application. She is the chair of the AMIA NLP Working Group.
David Carrell, PhD is from Group Health Research Institute in Seattle, WA where he leads Group Health’s natural language processing (NLP) efforts. He is currently participating in several projects to build infrastructures for collaborative, multi-site secondary use of electronic health record data to support research and improve patient care.
