Achilles - A platform for exploring and visualizing clinical data summary statistics - Mark Velez, Ning "Sunny" Shang

Abstract

This presentation introduces ACHILLES (Automated Characterization of Health Information at Large-scale Longitudinal Evidence Systems), a framework to explore and visualize clinical data summary statistics. ACHILLES is open-source, developed and published by the OHDSI consortium. OHDSI (Observational Health Data Sciences and Informatics) is a multi-stakeholder and interdisciplinary collaborative to bring out the value of observational health data through large-scale analytics and evidence generation. This talk also introduces applications of ACHILLES in the clinical care and research settings.

Bio

Mark Velez, MA, Department of Biomedical Informatics, Columbia University

Mark Velez is the technical lead for the Clinical Data Warehouse team at Columbia University Medical Center. He received a Bachelor of Science in Computer & Information Science at Brooklyn College and a Master of Arts in Biomedical Informatics at Columbia University. He has worked as a software developer and project manager for several tech startups and for the New York City Department of Health and currently leads technical architecture at Columbia University, the central coordinating center of Observational Health Data Sciences and Informatics (OHDSI).

Ning “Sunny” Shang, PhD, Department of Biomedical Informatics, Columbia University

Dr. Ning Shang (a.k.a Sunny) is a postdoctoral research scientist currently working at Columbia University, Department of Biomedical Informatics. She received a Bachelor in Medical Information Sciences at China Medical University prior to working as a medical editor at the Chinese Journal of Tuberculosis and Respiratory Diseases. Pursuing academic advance, she received her PhD in Health Informatics from The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston. Her research interests are pharmacovigilance integrating clinical data and scientific literature, clinical data characterization and data quality. She currently works for Dr. George Hripcsak’s BD2K administrative supplement project, developing a system to assess suitability of clinical databases for observational research.
