Title: "Building a Private Cloud to Handle Big (and Sensitive) Data"
View: (Archived webinar recording)

Abstract:
iDASH (integrating Data for Analysis, anonymization, and Sharing) is a National Center for Biomedical Computing funded by the NIH. Its goal is to promote access to biomedical and health data and computational tools, while preserving patient privacy. We will present the details of the cyberinfrastructure we built to allow tiered access to data collections, some of which contain personal health identifiers. We will also present algorithms and tools that we have been developing to allow privacy-preserving access to healthcare data.

Speaker Bios:
Lucila Ohno-Machado, MD, PhD is Associate Dean for Informatics and Technology at the School of Medicine, University of California San Diego, founding chief of the Division of Biomedical Informatics and Professor of Medicine. She received her medical degree from the University of Sao Paulo and her doctoral degree in medical information sciences and computer science from Stanford. Dr. Ohno-Machado is the principal investigator for iDASH, the newest National Center for Biomedical Computing funded by the NIH. She leads a group of biomedical informatics faculty with diverse backgrounds in biomedicine, and quantitative sciences. Prior to her current position, she was faculty at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School and at the MIT Division of Health Sciences and Technology and former director of its informatics training program. Dr. Ohno-Machado is an elected fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering and of the American College of Medical Informatics, American Society for Clinical Investigation, and Editor-In-Chief for the Journal of the American Medical Informatics Association (JAMIA). She is recipient of several research and teaching awards. Her research focuses on predictive model evaluation.

Dallas Thornton is the Division Director for Health Cyberinfrastructure at UC San Diego’s San Diego Supercomputer Center. Dallas’s division is focused on the health domain and responsible for delivering secure cyberinfrastructure, software, and services to support government, academia, and industry. Mr. Thornton is the principal investigator for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services’ MIG Data Engine program at SDSC, supporting federal efforts to combat fraud, waste, and abuse through analysis of Medicaid claims and referential data. He leads the infrastructure core for the NIH-funded iDASH National Center for Biomedical Computing and is responsible for designing and managing its private cloud infrastructure for biomedical research.  In 2011, Dallas led the effort to architect and deploy SDSC Cloud, the largest and highest-performance known academic cloud storage repository, including over 5 petabytes of disk at inception. His interests lie in bringing together the right data, tools, and people to enable discovery and informed decision making. Mr. Thornton received his masters in management of technology and his MBA from Vanderbilt University.
